What the buildings reveal

The most recognisable feature is the corner tower, round below and polygonal above, beside the enclosed courtyard ranges. The former moat and connection to the town wall explain a lowland castle’s defensive setting. Read the tower with the surrounding streets and buildings: changes to the urban edge have made some once-obvious defensive relationships less visible than the tower’s prominent roof.

Reading the surviving fabric

The most recognisable feature is the corner tower, round below and polygonal above, beside the enclosed courtyard ranges. The former moat and connection to the town wall explain a lowland castle’s defensive setting. Read the tower with the surrounding streets and buildings: changes to the urban edge have made some once-obvious defensive relationships less visible than the tower’s prominent roof.

Former moated urban castle with corner tower and courtyard ranges

Its four-sided courtyard differs from the isolated tower-house stereotype. Offices, stores, circulation and residence could occupy connected ranges while the tower marked the fortified corner. These functional relationships are an interpretation of the documented layout, not claims about the exact furnishing of lost rooms. The later wings are historical evidence of expanding government as much as alterations to a medieval monument.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

Engelbert von der Mark and urban obligations

The patron was both a church leader and a territorial ruler. Financing and maintenance tied the castle to institutions and townspeople: EBIDAT records a cathedral-chapter loan for construction and an obligation on the citizens to keep it defensible. This makes the castle evidence of negotiated, sometimes unequal urban government, rather than simply an archbishop’s private residence overlooking a river.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

Historic displays and uncertain present access

Public tourism pages retain older descriptions, while a 2024 local report questioned continued public access. The interior is therefore not presented here as reliably open. Confirm arrangements directly with the current operator or municipal tourist office. Likewise, a modern torture-themed display is an exhibition choice and cannot establish that the same room historically held the devices shown.
