Narration transcript: Welcome and introduction

Heidelberg Castle stands on the slopes of the Königstuhl above the Neckar River. Its red sandstone ruins combine late-medieval fortifications with some of Germany's finest Renaissance palace façades. It is not a single Gothic ruin. Heidelberg's history combines a medieval court, extraordinarily rich Renaissance architecture, damage from war and fire, and a later decision to protect rather than completely reconstruct the remains.

Overview

The ruins that became a symbol

Heidelberg Castle stands on the slopes of the Königstuhl above the Neckar River. Its red sandstone ruins combine late-medieval fortifications with some of Germany's finest Renaissance palace façades.

It is not a single Gothic ruin. Heidelberg's history combines a medieval court, extraordinarily rich Renaissance architecture, damage from war and fire, and a later decision to protect rather than completely reconstruct the remains.

Historical timeline

  1. 1225: The residence of the Palatine counts at Heidelberg is documented.
  2. 1556–1559: The Ottheinrich Wing was built as a lavish Renaissance residence.
  3. 1601–1607: The Friedrich Wing was erected for Elector Friedrich IV.
  4. 1689–1693: War and demolition devastated major parts of the castle.
  5. 1764: Lightning strikes caused major fires in the already damaged residence.
  6. Around 1900: A major reconstruction debate ended with a general commitment to preserving the ruin.
  7. Early 1600s: The Hortus Palatinus garden project reshaped the hillside but remained unfinished.
  8. Nineteenth century: Romantic artists celebrated the ruins and promoted their preservation.
  9. Late 1500s: The Ottheinrich Wing exemplified Renaissance architectural ambition at Heidelberg.
  10. Early 1600s: A sequence of palatial wings turned a fortified residence into a prestigious Renaissance ensemble.
  11. Nineteenth century: Charles de Graimberg played a significant role in conserving Heidelberg Castle's ruins.
