Reading the surviving fabric

Altena is best approached as both a medieval site and a document of historicism. Old masonry does survive, but the visual unity of towers, roofs and walls owes much to modern design. A reconstructed roofline is evidence of how the early twentieth century imagined a usable castle, not automatic proof that a medieval visitor would have recognised every detail. Distinguishing these layers makes the experience more interesting, not less authentic.

Fritz Thomée, Georg Frentzen and the hostel pioneers

Thomée promoted the reconstruction and Frentzen designed it. Richard Schirrmann and Wilhelm Münker connected the monument with the youth-hostel movement.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

The 'all too near' foundation story

The name legend describes a provocative foundation near a rival. It is presented as tradition; the official chronology explicitly questions its historical foundation.

TOPCASTLES / FAQ

Questions before you visit

What is certain, and what remains open?

The dates 1912 and 1914 circulate because the initiative and its permanent accommodation have not always been described consistently. Here they remain explicitly differentiated. The regional museum adds another perspective, linking medieval lordship with the working history of the Märkisches Sauerland. Read the reconstructed walls, the preserved hostel spaces and the exhibitions as complementary evidence: Altena is a story about how a society repeatedly chooses to use its past.
