What the buildings reveal

From outside, distinguish the round keep and uphill shield wall from the reconstructed residential frontage. The landward neck ditch answered the most dangerous approach, while the river-facing palace advertised the lord’s presence. The keep once rose substantially higher than its surviving portion. Modern photographs can explain this arrangement, but they cannot replace plans or archaeological evidence for lost floors and roofs.

Reading the surviving fabric

From outside, distinguish the round keep and uphill shield wall from the reconstructed residential frontage. The landward neck ditch answered the most dangerous approach, while the river-facing palace advertised the lord’s presence. The keep once rose substantially higher than its surviving portion. Shield-wall castle with round keep and historicist residential frontage

The castle is part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage landscape, whose importance includes the accumulated relationship between settlements, fortifications and river trade. That does not make Katz a separately inscribed UNESCO monument or a publicly accessible museum. Its silhouette is a public landscape experience while ownership and interior access remain private.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

The counts and Ferdinand Berg

The building supported the counts’ possessions on the right bank against Trier’s nearby Deuernburg, later known as Burg Maus. It also linked the family’s positions at Rheinfels and Reichenberg. This was a network of territory, office and force rather than a single fort commanding everything within sight. Castle officials are documented from 1378, giving the site an administrative function alongside its military presence.

Katz and Maus: names and rivalry

The popular pairing of “cat” and “mouse” is a memorable shorthand for territorial rivalry, not a record of literal animal symbolism directing medieval policy. No interior tour is offered to the public. Enjoy the building from permitted public viewpoints and respect gates and residential boundaries; a path near a castle does not grant entry to its grounds.
