What the buildings reveal

Compare the compact keep with the long, roofless hall. They express different needs: a strongly protected tower and a large space for public courtly life. Gates, enclosure and water supply bound those functions into a working residence. The sandstone’s colour unifies the view, but matching material does not prove that every wall was built in the same campaign or has the same amount of original fabric.

Reading the surviving fabric

Compare the compact keep with the long, roofless hall. They express different needs: a strongly protected tower and a large space for public courtly life. Gates, enclosure and water supply bound those functions into a working residence. The sandstone’s colour unifies the view, but matching material does not prove that every wall was built in the same campaign or has the same amount of original fabric.

Reconstruction raises a useful question about authenticity. The tower gives visitors enclosed spaces in which to learn about medieval culture, while the hall’s missing roof makes the scale of loss evident. Both are valuable, but they communicate different kinds of evidence. Museum exhibits explain wider castle life and should not automatically be treated as proof that each displayed activity occurred in that precise room.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

Jülich rulers and their powerful prisoners

Conflict with Cologne gave the castle a particularly forceful political role. High-ranking prisoners included Duke Ludwig of Bavaria and the archbishops Konrad von Hochstaden and Engelbert von Falkenburg. Their confinement demonstrates coercive lordship more clearly than a generic dungeon legend. The individual circumstances should remain distinct; not every story told about a medieval prison can be assigned to the same chamber. Gerhard of Jülich supported the settlement beside the castle and granted town rights in 1313. Around 1340 a major hall-building campaign raised the architectural scale of the residence. The great hall proclaimed status through assembly and ceremony as well as military strength. Its surviving shell should be understood as evidence of a courtly institution, not merely a damaged barracks or oversized defensive wall.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

Prison history and modern reconstruction

The well-documented imprisonment of powerful men makes an invented ghost story unnecessary. This account separates those historical people from later dramatic retellings and keeps disputed minor dates open. The museum and the outdoor castle have different practical access conditions. Check the current district museum information for seasonal changes, tours and room closures rather than assuming the whole complex follows one unrestricted schedule.
