Narration transcript: Introduction

Burg Wirtemberg. Burg Wirtemberg no longer stands. Its hill is occupied by the burial chapel built for Queen Katharina in 1820–1824. This profile follows the lost ancestral castle and explains its replacement, so modern chapel photographs are explicitly labelled as a later building on the castle site.

What to notice

Compare a historical image of the castle with the chapel's present façade. The change in form is complete, while the symbolic hilltop location remains. If the interior is open, the dedication stone offers a direct material encounter with the lost castle; check its current display access before visiting.

Turning points

The stone was rediscovered in 1790 after reuse in the fabric. In 1819 Wilhelm I ordered removal of the castle following Katharina's death. Construction of Salucci's chapel began in 1820 and was completed in 1824. Since 1928 the medieval stone has been displayed in the chapel's northern arm.

Reading the architecture

The present freestanding domed building is Neoclassical. Salucci drew on the Pantheon and Palladian architecture, using porticoes and monumental stairs to address the hilltop setting. These columns are not castle defences. The medieval dedication stone is the key surviving object linking the new monument to the older chapel.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

People and power

Queen Katharina, King Wilhelm I and architect Giovanni Battista Salucci belong to the nineteenth-century replacement story. The medieval dynasty precedes them by centuries. Keeping those phases separate makes the site more intelligible: a royal memorial deliberately occupied the ancestral location rather than simply extending an existing castle room.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

Stories and evidence

The chapel is widely presented as a monument to enduring love. That is an interpretation supported by its commemorative purpose and inscription; it does not turn every romantic anecdote about the couple into a documented fact. The castle's demolition is also part of the story, alongside the new memorial.
